History and the Need:
One of our Founders, Dr. Henry J. L. Marriott developed the first Advanced ECG
Panel Reader’s Exam in 1969, which he assisted us in merging with a new Advanced
Certification Exam in 1992. Prior
to these developments, there was no standard with which to measure the
competency of a physician whose professional role demands s/he be proficient in
reading electrocardiograms both simple and very complex.
Due to the fact that anywhere from 12-20% of patients with acute coronary
syndromes were sent home from emergency departments undiagnosed, drove the ABCM
to develop standards for emergency electrocardiography.
From theses standards they developed the only Emergency
Electrocardiography Exam in existence in 1995.
Current EKG Exams Available:
1. Advanced EKG Physician Panel
Reader’s Exam
2. Emergency EKG Physician Exam
3. 12-Lead EKG for CCU Nurse’s and
EKG Technician’s Exam
4. Basic EKG for Telemetry & Chest
Pain Center Nurse’s Exam
5. Cardiac Monitor Technician’s
Exam
Several thousand Physicians, Nurses and Technicians on an International scale
have demonstrated their proficiency by passing one or more of these Board
Certification Exams.
Answer to Sample Question:
NSR with inverted U waves are present in V4-V5 (suggestive of myocardial
ischemia), and low voltage T waves in standard lead 1 and V6 suggestive of
lateral wall ischemia, and a down-sloping and inverted T wave in aVL also
suggestive of lateral wall ischemia.
In addition there is a T wave in V1 that is the same size or taller than
the T wave in V6 which is another sign of myocardial ischemia.
